So I rented it last night. Figured I shoulds ee the first half before watching the second one. It was....a "good" movie but as far as a movie from the book, it was disappointing. They made a lot of the same mistakes as they did in the first ones. They took out a lot of dialogue and rearranged it, which didn't neccessarily help the plot. And they of course took out my favorite lines. And they added things. I hate the whole "Ooooh! I wanna do this!" Those books were so jam packed with good stuff that all they had to do was pick in choose something great fromt ehb ook isntead of adding. And frankly...unless you had the books you would have been completely lost in some areas of the movie. The biggest draw back is you don't see the whole thought process of Harry's figuring things out. That was a great disservice to remove that.

So...eh...disappointed. Not bad, and I know it's tough to put a book into a movie but if you take things out in the consideration of "time" and then put your own things in? That's bad. When you center on showing one aspect of the story and neglect others because you're focused on filming to mkae something look cool, bad.

I had not read the book for this one (only read like the first book, maybe). Either way, I didn't like it as much as any f the other ones.

I don't remember the first part 7 film that well, but I do remember that the first half of the final book dragged on interminably, and I think I felt the film sucked less than that.

I still think that it's a shame that J. K. Rowling knew so little about wizards that she had to make up a bunch of rubbish.

i was angry about this during the first four or so harrys potter. but really, books don't translate well into movies if they stick to it too strictly. for example, way more of the first half of deathly hallows was them in the forest than part 1 showed, but most of it was narration - harder to put on the big screen

authors weave plot points together using descriptions, back-story, asides, etc. - doing that in film runs the risk of overloading with exposition. it's also much easier in books to switch back and forth between settings/scenes - movies become too disjointed, so they leave parts out to smooth the pacing i think

books will always be > movies b/c of the limitations of eye-based content vs. mind-based

pseudo-spoiler for part 2 text:

however, there really was no excuse to gimp the final duel scene that was my only major gripe with part 2

Is that a psuedo spoiler for the movie? I read the book already, curious how the last movie is...if it's worth it to go watch it. I'll probably go watch it since I already watched allt eh others...

You should see the last part... I thought it was good. The effects are very well done, it looks amazing - but see it in 2D, it's a dark picture, 3D can only crush the blacks and make it look like a mess I'd think (plus, it wasn't filmed natively in 3D or anything). And my main criticisms of it (like the epilogue, ) are all things straight from the book.

I agree with everything Milk said, although I can't remember the final thing exactly from the books... are you talking about the greater scale, or the 1-on-1? And didn't it end in the great/dining hall versus outside? That's what I remembered. That and I don't recall seeing a twin focused upon in the movie at all. If you can't tell I'm too lazy to dospoiler highlighting so this is the best I can do.

Also I thought the first two movies sucked donkey balls... perhaps a combo of Chris Columbus directing and JKR having too much control? They were imo too perfect copies of the book. The 3rd movie still remains my favorite... I thought that was just amazingly done, nearly 2.5 hours long if I remember but it was packed and flowed beautifully. To render the time-travel sequence that well was really impressive.

4th book was probably my favorite... long, chock-full of crap, and the shocking execution of Cedric was great combined with the graveyard faceoff with a reconstituted Voldemordt was excellent. Movie was ok too, better than 1 & 2 for sure.

By the 5th book wand battles seemed less about casting spells and more about using wands as pew-pew-pew laser guns.
