For the good gank groups, success in RvR comes before any social commitments, which is why the good ones don't last very long (with some notable exceptions).
As an analogy, anyone who has played on an intramural sports team like softball knows that the worst teams are often the most fun to play on, because they enjoy the comraderie more than winning.
