After finding the old map of one of the natural caves near Ferrum, I showed it to a Senior "Outdoor Rec" major who I was *cough* dating at the time (don't tell my wife!). And yea, you could get a undergraduate degree in Outdoor Recreation. [face_party]
The cave was located along the Pig River just outside of Ferrum.
In the last 100 years I suppose the river had shifted a bit. The entrance to the cave was under the river now. Tami (the outdoor rec friend) found it. She had to dive to the bottom of the Pig River, swim under the rock, and surface inside the cave. It was my first big “fear factor†moment in my life. In total honesty, it was a 5 foot swim down, 5 feet under a rock wall, and then surface. Naturally there was a fear you’d get turned around or caught on something and just eff’ing drown.

Once inside we quickly saw that we were not the first ones to discover the cave … but we were the first in about 20 or so years ( I have no clue how long the mouth of the cave had been underwater).
The cave was NOTHING like the movie Descent. It was roomy enough to stand up in, but muddy as all get out. Tami ended up exploring most of it. I cave walls were caked with mud ceiling to floor. I kept getting paranoid of the mud walls collapsing and burying us. Tami assured me that the rock on the other side of the clay (not mud) was 2/3 the strength of steel and wouldn’t collapse.
The only thing we really found were lots of foot prints, hand prints, and “Bob was here! Class of 55!!†type stuff written in the muddy walls. Tami managed to locate a few gems such as geodes and some small crystal formations but didn’t remove them. She has a pretty high ethic in preserving caves and she promised she’d leave me in this cave if I tried to remove them.

Tami wrote a paper on the cave discovery that eventually landed her a spot at a graduate school out in Illinois in Recreation Management. I took several clay samples and water samples back for analysis. My paper wasn’t nearly as exciting as hers.
next adventure was to find the 3 graves....
