The reason the whole shadow thing worked is that Isparians, Empyreans, and Shadows all use the same model and animations.
If you would like to remake over 200 animations, good luck to you. That's enough work to keep a professional animator busy for a LONG TIME.

Wouldn't it be possible to make the models compatible with the current animations? They could at least be made more smooth and higher poly.

No, the way AC animations work is that they are a deform set for the model's vertices. It is why AC animations are so fluid and smooth compared to most other games.

Has anyone tried making a bmpswap that is compatible with ToD yet?

I have a bunch of tools and files, etc from before ToD when I was doing AC skins work. I just haven't got around to toying with it post-ToD yet. Seems like I heard that file formats have changed...

the dat format has changed slightly..
the way the data is stored is the same as before, but it's moved around, and the header block and things like that are different sized now.
Most of the DAT code can be fixed with minor modifications because the reading and processing of the data is essentially the same.. the only real difference is that the data moved.

Ken was writing some replaceent code, but I don't know how far he got. There are a lot of unknown values now, which make writing new files a little iffy.
