I think it's wrong to write a plugin for pay, personally.


Takes it from the hobby realm to someplace icky.


Plus, it's against the Decal Code of Ethics if nothing else.


Besides, writing even a simple plugin requires incredible amounts of time. Who's gonna do that for a few piddly in-game items? You couldn't afford it in RL money, trust me.


Plugins are a labor of love and/or obsession. That's how they get written. Money can't buy you love, brother.

This post could possibly fall under the no buying/selling for cash except for in the classified ads section. The original post did not specify method of payment, so an assumption of cash was entirely reasonable. That was clarified to non-cash, but still info on what kind of plugin he was looking for. The fact that he would not say in public, and wanted PMs only, and was willing to pay, makes it probable that it is a plugin of a nature that no respectable decal developer would take the job.

It could be argued that the COD does not specifically apply to coding plugins for money. Besides which I am sure "incentives" have been donated in the past.

I understand what you are saying now. I thought he was on the up and up.


I know writing code is a pain in the arse but there is a strong sense of pride in doing it. I understand there is a difference between doing it for a living and doing it because you want to / have to so that the little voices stop singing in your head. My only point was that mountain dew and funyuns cost money and that is not even including the caffeine injections.

My thinking was like Gourus... last I checked, soliciting of cash on VNBoards was not allowed because you're not allowed to "profit" through VNBoards.. or something like that.. Gouru quoted the section or close to.


As for it not being a cash request.. that was my mistake.. most people who say they'll "pay" usually means cash, and most people who read it will interpret it the same. That's the problem with vaugeness.


As for the Donation vs Solicitation thing... Donations are completely voluntary and actually cannot be requested through VNBoards either.. I can't sit here and make a post saying "people.. paypal me money!" because that wouldn't be allowed.... even if voluntary and even if though donation. However.. it is completely differernt for someone to make a post saying .. "please remember to thank all of your favorite developers.. and donations are always appreciated" as long as *I* was not the person saying that... or the person saying it wasn't showing any favor to anyone in specific.. it's a big gray area, but there are things that fall cleanly on the wrong side of the line.
