Yep, verified it.
With time it is misreading the number of empty slots you have. The number on login is correct and it gets further and further off with time.

Update: complete removal of the buffing portion of Alinco through add/remove programs, then reinstalling the program, solved the buffing issue. Not sure why ... but it did!

I see what you mean about Alinco thinking I have less free slots than I actually do. I didn't notice it before since I usually just use my main pack for salvaging and move good stuff to my backpacks. I noticed it when Alinco stopped looting a corpse that still had 4 more items on it and my main backpack was down to 8 slots left. Oddly, all I did to fix it was close and reopen the corpse and it started looting again.
