I think it's just graphics related. I turned graphics down to install default levels and it appears to be stable again.
I recalled after starting to look at the video config settings that I had turned them up shortly after moving to a new PC with 256MB video memory - guess that is what caused the problem.
Just after some ad hoc testing - it appears that the Landscape distance detail level has a large impact on the system resources - when it's on low I haven't seen the problem reoccur.
I'll revisit my video card capabilities because judging by the post above I "should" be able to crank up the video performance above default with the 256 card.
