you may want to check this thread http://vnboards.ign.com/ac_utilities/b5432/113031404/p1/?1

what folks in the past have noted is that OLDER programs like decal DON"T fully work with DX10/11 and really needs 9. above provides a link to dl 9x so decal can use that while your newer stuff uses 10/11

Each version of DX can be separately installed, like .NET.

Use Yaroz's links .. http://vnboards.ign.com/ac_utilities/b5432/113031404/p1/?1 (same as above)

The link for reinstalling the DirectX9 is http://bit.ly/9agfV6

Pay no attention to the DirectX10 and/or 11 that may be already installed in your machine.

I have installed DiretX9 over top of (after) my Decal installation (all OSs.. W2k, XP, Vista, and Win7).

yeah I downloaded that, but the redistributeable comes with a ton of versions. I'm not sure if I installed it correctly. Is there a way to check?

Last time I ran this installation (in the past hour), it had only one version in it.

Quick review of runnning this installation ..

(1) When you run the "directx_feb2010_redist.exe", the window that opens is a zip extraction (after the first window with accepting the license agreement). This extraction will deploy all the installation files needed for installing DirectX. (Looking at the names of the files would give you the feeling of "ton of versions".) The default folder location for the extraction is buried in the TEMP folder. You can extract the files to ANY folder you wish .. it does not need to be in the TEMP folder. Extract the files to a place where it is easy for you to find.

(2) Go to that folder in Windows Explorer and run the "DXSETUP.exe". (Microsoft could had done this in a easier way!) Accept all the default answers.

(3) Restart the computer. The installation does not come out and say "restart", but, in example, Windows 7 will indicate there is a update to run ..

(4) To validate it, select the Start Menu, Run, and enter the command "dxdiag". Give it a minute to look over your computer (bar in the lower left corner). Then select the "Next Page" or click on the "Display" tab at the top. Verify that your "Direct3D Acceleration" is Enabled under the "DirectX Features". If not, see the notes below that.

! ! ! I M P O R T A N T ! ! !

TheNemesisII, PLEASE READ .. UPDATE ..

Today, I had the VERY SAME thing you had. Same error message and all.

I have a small netbook laptop that I play AC on once in a while. I use the netbook more for other things, but, AC is loaded on it. To my surprise today, I found myself staring at the same error message. First thing was to follow my own advise from our previous post above .. with no success. I even was check firewall and whatever to be sure that the error was not the result of something else triggering it. History wise, AC has worked on this netbook with no problems (and no changes) for the past 18 months.

I finally reread that error message again ... "Try a different screen resolution .."

SO! .. I checked my UserPreferences.ini file. Sure enough, it had the "Resolution=1024x768" and FullScreen=True. My netbook display ONLY HAS 1024x600!!! I manually edited the UserPreferences.ini file to read Resolution=1024x600. As a safety, I changed the FullScreen=False (which I reset back in-game). Everything went back to normal and the game started with no errors!

Bottom line. DirectX does not allow AC to request a screen resolution larger then the physical screen.
