I used to ski back when I was in high school -- was HORRIBLE at it (almost got kicked off the bunny slope my first time out)... That was one good thing about the math-science team back at the high school I went to -- they TRIED to expose people to other things. After 4 years of skiing about 6 day trips and 1 weekend trip per year I was able to kind of manage some of the easier intermediate slopes in vermont.
I wouldnt want to try it now though. I fell so very many times and I am not young anymore.
43 year old bones arent the same as 16 year old bones. I dont think I saw a single snowboard nor did I know what one was back then.

I would highly suggest getting ski lessons. It will save you a lot of headache. It's something that takes a tremendous amount of time to perfect. I ski and snowboard but I prefer boarding.

here are a few tips
1. look for beginner runs, they are clearly marked with a big black diamond
2. closing your eyes will automatically reduce your speed
3. ski drunk, it's funner

Another vote for lessons. Skiing is pretty easy to pick up, but you need some guided learning to help you figure out the technique...

Lessons are a must. Its not a sport you can just pick up, even if you are athletic.
At least learn how to stop, turn and get on and off the chairlift before you go anywhere.
Anyone that boards or skis knows we don't really need to tell him this. The first time you step into those ski's and onto the snow you will know the helpless feeling. An instructor will be your best friend.
