My sister has used a pellet stove for about the last 15 years and never heard her have a major issue with it like what Reap describes. I wonder if he had a load of wet pellets in it or the air intake get choked off or something. I wouldn't stop using it but I can certainly understand the fear off the product that such an event would produce.
Anyway, good point to check out all the detectors in the house and swap batteries.

I am picking up a carbon monoxide detector on my way home today, and we do change the batteries in the smoke detectors every clock change
