There is no failing hard. If someone ever said to me, "Do you know anyone that has boughten something?" I would mock them soundly, because it's not a real word.
thefreedictionary.com may argue that it is a dialect word, but dialect words do not often find their way into M-W or OED.
Therefore, no, no failing. It's not a word.
Edit - and when they do, in checking M-W.com, they're listed as dialect words, only used in local circumstances.

I bet that 50+% of people near you would not say boughten because it would make them sound unbelievably stupid. Still no failing. It is not a real word.
Additionally, any school that teaches children it is a real word, is doing them a disservice, because once they hit the real world they will be thought of as stupid.
