Its tough, it's hard to say something that isn't the standard "He's in a better place", "He's not suffering anymore", "ou did the right thing", ect.. While those may be true there's really nothing, save maybe time, that helps heal the kind of hole that's missing in your life.
Sometimes that hole stays open and never closes. You'll love a new pet but that won't take the place of your old pal. The new pet will rise in stature in your life to equal that of your lost one, but not the "same". There's just ONE of each pet you have.

I still get sad when I think too hard about my first dog dying 6 years ago. And the fact that I wasn't even in the country when it happened, I wasn't able to be with him when he was euthanized. (Enlarged heart, edema in his lungs, he wasn't coming back from it at 10 years of age.)

It feels empty giving condolences when a human dies, as well as a pet... I always wish there was something I could actually say that WOULD make someone feel better, but I know there really isn't.
