I don't know how anyone can find the rainbow bridge comforting, I think it's awful and just makes me cry even more. Whoever said rubbing salt on wounds, I feel the same way about that damned poem.

The ER vet sent me a card with this on it:
Grieve not,
or speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you,
I loved you so..

I still can't read it without tearing up.
After my dog died my sister sent me a card with a picture of a night sky with a constellation outlining a dog shape and inside it said "Heaven is a little brighter"
I think the best thing you can do is acknowledge their loss in a manner that is congruent with their feelings. If they thought of their pet as a family member, then treat their loss accordingly. I know that putting my cat and dog down this year was one of the worst memories of life I have over 29 years. Some may say it is dramatic but they were both a huge part of my life. More so than any other human being to date.

Tell them you are there to talk to them if they need to talk to somebody but can't
Makes a huge difference on the recovery process I've noticed when I had someone to talk to and when I didn't

a nun friend sent me this image the day after Heidi passed
it helped me thru the day
I have this image hanging in my office by pics of Rudy.
There are cards you can purchase for your friend that has lost a dear pet.
