I'm almost there with you, but I ended up enjoying it for the cheese that it was, but, I didn't read the books, (I don't know if you did, making a big difference I'm sure.)
It was enjoyable as a throwaway fantasy series, in the vein of Hercules or Xena...
But, that they didn't make more, and that it just ended abruptly, (shrug)

Only 5 episodes in. It's pretty campy, but I view it much in the way I saw Xena and Hercules, fun fantasy shows.

I didn't read the books, I thought the chick was hot and the plot had a reasonable space to work in... but the acting was horrible, I loved Xena, and Hercules was alright, but I couldn't watch this show, I tried.

The entire premise was horrible.
The guy who wrote those books was an idiot.
Giving him influence into the TV show was beyond stupid.
I hope he dies in a car fire.
