We didn't go into Iran because every day the Iranians held them...the USA looked better to the rest of the world. Plus we knew we would eventually get them out. Seems that sorta worked for us when the Iranians took hostages in the past....
Somalia has no legitimate government in control of the vast majority of the country , those hostages were as good as dead and letting it go unpunished would simply encourage other bastards to imitate the actions of the bastards who kidnapped them.
The US special forces did exactly what they are trained to do. Their job. Protect America, it's people and it's interests anywhere on earth they can do so effectively.
Damn fine job. Damn fine decision by our CIC.

These highly specialized troops are supposed to be used to track down and eliminate the most dangerous terrorists in the world. These men are very expensive to train and deploy.
As such, we should only use them in causes that meet some sort of risk vs reward criteria.
Under no circumstances should we be risking an entire SEAL team to rescue a single american citizen who voluntarily entered a war zone to perform humanitarian work.
If you're dumb enough to travel to Somalia then you need to suffer the consequences resulting from your stupidity.

Where do you draw the line? If it was another solider/operative in there and they rescued them would it be ok? An official of some sort, like a diplomat? A school bus full of kids?
What about location? Is one location a good idea and another a poor idea? If these people were help hostage by a terrorist organization would that make it ok? If the terrorists were in Pakistan instead?
What if they were black Muslim extremist pirates from France?

They were not kidnapped by pirates. They were WILLINGLY in Somalia participating in de-mining efforts.
While I might appreciate their eagerness to put their own lives at risk while pursuing humanitarian causes, I don't believe we should spend a dime trying to rescue them once the inevitable happens.
I agree. We have no place violating the borders of another soverign nation with military forces without it expressly being allowed by its legitimate government.
Isn't Somalia a libertarian paradise though?
