I'm not talking about McDonalds, ones that are a cut above fast food. There is a mexican restaurant here where you go up to the counter, order your food and pay, then they bring it out to you. They don't have a tip jar, but I always leave $2 on the counter when I walk away to my table to give them a little towards beer money. Just a bunch of college kids working there, I know they have to be short on beer money. Am I being cheap?

At places like that, I usually don't tip. I do if I have extra cash, but i'm pretty poor lately.

Yes. If someone is serving my food then I tip. If I have to order at a counter and take the food to my seat myself then I don't tip.

If someone serves me, either food or drinks, I tip. If it's all self serve and I'm even expected to dump my own trash. I don't. Usually.

So how much do you tip? I don't think the standard 25% is fair if I have to stand at a counter, but I always wonder if $2 is insulting and they might be squirting some eye drops in my food to give me the poops.

Depends.. Are they keeping my beverage topped off? Are they checking up on my dining occasionally? If they are doing these things then yes.
If they "just" bring the food to me and I have to refill my own beverage then no and why would I?

My minimum tip is $2, regardless of the bill. I usually tip between 20% and 25%, though. I've tipped as much as 100% because the person was seriously overworked and under appreciated.

Nah man, theres no topping off beverages. If you want a refill you have to go up to the counter to get one. They just bring the food to you, oh and they do clean up your table for you. The largest chain I can think of that has similar service is Panera. Maybe you have one of those in your area for reference to the kind of service I'm talking about.

Big Boy brings out the food, but I don't tip there. The tips would probably be stolen off the table in most cases anyway.
