well, everyone has their opinion.... this wasnt about "cellphones in school" it was about the banning of an article of clothing that can hide a cellphone... just as a purse, pants, shorts, bras, underwear, can all hide cellphones.

Our local HS banned phones outside of lockers during school hours(8:30ish to 3:30ish)
edit: I believe last year they added a provision saying that you are allowed to have them out during your lunch period as well but I'm not
sure if the school board passed that one...
There are phones in every single room and an on duty police officer.
If there is an emergency your student needs to be paying attention to the alarms and getting themselves to safety.
Not worried about phone calls from mommy and daddy.
yall are missing my point, entirely, its not to call me, or me to call them... its for them to call the cops if needed...
It's not a middle schoolers job to call 911.
If the school is getting shot up, tell the nearest teacher and GTFO.
The last thing, in that situation, that a 911 operator wants is 100 middle school kids clogging up the lines.
Unless you are saying that your kid might just see the person first!
Oh... that's going to happen far often enough to make an exception to the rule 
edit: I would bet that it's even in the "school rules" that the kids aren't to call the police from school property that they are to report it to an authority figure that makes that call.

A shooting in school is a rare occurrence, disruptions from cell phones or other items is an hourly occurrence in school. You don't have to have every single modern convenience at every moment in order to live, especially when it is a demonstrable problem in certain settings.

I doubt every kid having a cell phone is going to stop a school shooter. I am sure Virginia Tech students had cell phones by the bushels and it didn't really help.
Besides, do you want your kid to run for their life and get into a classroom before a lockdown or stop and dial 911?
