I've been to the Grand Oasis to have breakfast. Rode up and down the glass elevator admiring all those hanging gardens inside.
My impression of Cancun was that it was almost literally a US city situated in the Yucatan.

Cool, glad you're alright.
Typically just stay the EFF away from the border. To visit Tiajuana and the like, you just have to want to die. But going to places like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel... you should be fine.
Just use some common sense. More than ever, do not venture out alone, do not go exploring, and don't do anything shady or off the beaten path (giggidy). Don't kid yourself, those cartels are more terrifying than what our military is fighting overseas.
