I would not suspect such since he said it will barely stay on for a minute. In one minute it is tough to heat up that fast, especially if has been sitting powered off for a while.
First step for me would be to remove everything you can, pci card, memory, cpu, etc.... blow it out with a compressor.. and reseat everything. Then eliminate memory sticks one by one if there is still an issue.

PC's don't just die...
The PC that my daughter does her homework on is almost 15 years old lol(GDI it's 2012 already?)
If it is shutting off, one component is failing somewhere.
Just need to find which one and replace/fix it.

Part of the problem with replacing things is that its so old I dont even know if its worth it. This thing is almost 7 years old I think.

If the above does not fix, suspects are power supply and motherboard.
Personally, I would try the power supply first since it will be mildly cheaper and then you can always use it later with the new motherboard which would be next.
Does it give any beep codes? If so, research your mobo for that code and see if it helps.
