SID = Sensory integration dysfunction/ disorder (also known as sensory processing dysfunction). Some doctors classify it as a seperate disorder from Schizo, others say its just another component of it. Basically its where you have problems with things like textures, being touched, it can affect your energy levels, makes you over-sensitive to light/ sound etc. There's a whole bunch of problems associated with it, including one that is currently driving me insane (no pun intended): oral defensiveness. Basically i have trouble with anything being in my mouth (can only eat foods of a certain texture/ taste etc, have to use a certain toothpaste because i know i can tolerate the taste and texture of it, gagging if anything i cant handle goes in my mouth- no jokes!!), and lately i've been going through a "bad phase". I've been forcing myself to eat varied foods, even though what i actually want to eat is just Marmite sandwiches and rice (and in fact all i have had today is a Marmite sandwich and im going to have rice for dinner, so today is a write-off!). I can count on both hands the number of times in my life i've seen the dentist because of this problem, i've only had my teeth professionally cleaned once and i came out of the room almost crying because it was such a horrible experience. Im just getting really ticked off because i hate when this stuff gets bad, i end up wearing like 3 shirts and 1 pair of jeans over and over because everything else feels horrible, a whole bunch of stuff comes up. It sucks.

SID and autism pretty much go hand in hand, from what i've read it tends to be worse in people with autism spectrum disorders. Mine, while annoying, is not totally debilitating, and i've kind of learned over the years how to deal with it. The oral stuff is probably the worst for me because trying to eat something that makes you gag is really hard. It's very easy to say "oh just grow up and eat it", but if you start retching the minute it goes in your mouth, it makes stuff impossible to eat. It's easier to just give up and either not eat or just eat the things you know you can handle. Which yeah, as pointed out, is less than stellar for the diet

My son had a lot of food texture issues as a baby with his neurological disorder, he still has issues, but he is slowly getting over them. It's frustrating for everyone around you too.

Jezza, yeah its frustrating as hell. I will often cook one meal for Wolfz and then have something separate that i can handle eating, because i just cant face what we were planning to eat for dinner. Also when im in a bad place with it i dont want to be touched, freak out if stuff touches me etc. I try not to act out with it, but sometimes things really are just too much.
