Sounds to me like they wanted to kill it off.
This -- they can't kill it until it starts losing money -- thing is, it has such a low cost to run and there were enough legacy accounts that kept running that it barely stays afloat.
It sounds like a method of giving them a reason to nail the stake in the coffin.

Turbine never did understand what made their game good, that's why they only had a few years of real success with AC and it's been down hill ever since.
yet 13 years later and they still make money off of it where other MMOs go free to play within a year or so
And make even more money off the free to play model.

its not that.
As the game got older the player base shifted to pk type game on dt. DT just has the most players because pk gives people stuff to do. You got pk wars and raids and what not. Anyways they are just catering to the DT crowd it seems.
Myself I think its a mistake because this move imo is making a lot of people on the white worlds quit.
Myself am sick of these major overhauls to the system and not putting together live events for us and making quest giving us stuff to do. The game is 12 years old now it should already be balanced for the most part.

With all of the coding time that went into that they could have introduced a free to play model that
would make them far more money in the long run.

i know ppl with multiple accts that have unsubbed all but one, with plans to unsub that one after the patch
was wondering what others that still play thought of it all
I was pretty cool with everything until they decided to arbitrarily send all of my quest weapons into different skills, and chose to not make complete quest suites of all 21 variations. We went through a lot of discussion to make sure people's loot weapons would retain the correct skill and even automatically upgrade with the patch (though they blew this too by deciding not to move them relative to the new max but a point or two below instead), and then they pull out this BS of "by the way 2/3s of your quest weapons are now set to the wrong skill" just a few weeks before live.
I'm still playing, but I've recently moved back to DT where I'm less invested in years of equipment accumulation, so it will be easier for me to adjust to the changes. This is a big blow to many people who have a lot more invested in the game than I.

I wish they would consolidate the servers and offer a F2P model. I would like to check out the game again and may do so anyway to see these changes.

They actually talked about taking AC to F2P before either LOTRO or DDO, but the framework for AC wouldn't support micro transactions. It's still theoretically possible, but I don't think they have the manpower to do something this big.
