Yep, or if the Supreme Court had not way over stepped its bounds.

I think they did the best they could with the situation they were given. One of them had to lose and one had to win. By the time it got to the Supreme Court I doubt if anyone really knew who had actually won in FL. This was due to all the recounting and moving/destroying of ballots and everything else that went on down there.

Has absolutely nothing to do with the Supreme Court, voting is a state thing, they just didn't want to wait and bypassed their power limits. Umm we needed a decision made on a president...the inauguration was what? only a few weeks away when all this debauchery was put to rest by the Supreme Court. Im for one glad they made the decision. I wouldnt want an inauguration day to come and go without a President.

Everyone is registered to vote if they voted in the most recent presidential election, so if they died since Obama came into office, they're still registered. I think they even give more time than that, as I wasn't able to vote in the previous election because they sent my absentee ballot to the wrong address, but I was still able to vote in the next election.

just because they're registered doesn't mean they'll actually vote, instead of making new laws about showing ID, maybe they should just figure out how to automatically remove people from the list when they die.

OMG not a date, lets throw away the founding basis of the country because it might be inconvenient.

it's sad that so many people can't be bothered to vote yet there are nearly 2 million people who won't even let death keep them from the polls

Watching the reports on this and the grandstanding from all sides of the political spectrum, it is truly shocking just how much the basic principle of common sense has become detatched from our electoral process.

Is this a problem? Yes. And one that must be addressed, although it is a relatively minor problem and one that is harmless if proper precautions are taken, and one that self corrects over time. Most of it stems from the simple fact that it takes 2 full presidential election cycles to purge an inactive voter or inaccurate registration from the roles. This staggering number of double registrations and registered dead people is not however any form of election fraud or a deliberate act to undermine the system. It is simply an inerrant inefficiency of the system itself. So long as simple and reasonable steps are taken to prevent this inefficiency from being undermined or utilized by fraud then it really is a relatively minor non issue.

Short term the simple fix. The verification via photo id that the voter is who he or she says they are and resides where they claim to. Basic voter ID laws outright eliminate any fraud risks from this.

More troubling are the sudden calls that as a result of this major problem elections must be more centrally managed and controlled and taken away from the local level. That is a concept that is so ripe with fraud as to be staggering. A call for action worthy of Vladimir Putin or Hugo Chavez.

Anyone who believes that passing state laws requiring purchased voter picture ID cards, only available at the state DMV branch offices, and then subsequently closing DMV locations in liberal districts (as a cost cutting measure for the state, get it? winnky winky) isn't a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise minority voters is a complete moron.

Anyone who believes that passing state laws mandating college kids have to travel home to vote in the district of their listed home address instead of voting at their college isn't a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise huge liberal voting blocks is a complete moron.

"Why yes Tyrone, we do offer free busing services to the DMV in the next district over. Just kindly give the nice state trooper over at the table your name and address please."

A black man gets elected president, and before the next election 38 states dramatically change voting laws for the first time in 60 years making it more difficult for that same black man to be reelected.

Probably a coincidence.
