If no one suitable is found the child is put into a foster home until such time as the mother has finished her sentence as is deemed to be a fit parent. Of course I'm just a Correctional Officer who works for the oldest operating Penitentiary in the U.S... obviously BT knows better than I.
I've read that some places now have programs where the infant can stay with the mother until they're a year old. Can't remember the source though, and it's definitely not wide-spread.

Some people do take him seriously, that's the scary thing.

Sort of reminds me of the novel "Room" that I read recently... Kid living with Mom in a single room (she was kidnapped) for 4 years or so... Creepy, but interesting to think about that type of isolation and what effect it would have on a mini human being.
