Sorry for your loss
Alcohol and personal problems are a terrible mix. It's really sad to see people that can't get away from one to take care of the other.

I've always heard it runs in families but I simply don't believe it. My grandad, grandma, and uncle on my dad's side were alcoholics. Mt dad was close to being one. My brother and I can take or leave a beer. I thin many people see others in their family drink a lot and learn by exposure to it. I in no way think it's genetic. I don't care what the medical field says. I think people are just looking for an excuse to why they have a problem rather than being responsible about it.
Many in my wife's family were/are alcoholics too. More than in my family. But it didn't make my wife one.

Finding my husband's father when my husband was 30 changed my views a LOT on the topic of genetics. Due to circumstances beyond either of their control, my husband never got to meet his father till that point. It is scary how much they are alike- I mean, you know those movies about long-lost families (like Twins, or What a Girl Wants) and the newly reuinted are going through their morning routines or whatever and are doing the exact same things? Yeah it was just about to that point. Up until that moment I was very firmly in the "nurture over nature" camp. After that, though...there is absolutely no way that his father or anyone in his father's family could have influenced my husband through nurture or example, because he never met the people till then (his dad's family is awesome btw and were so thrilled that we found them- they'd been looking as well!)
So now, while I still firmly believe in free will and choice, I also think that people can be genetically inclined towards certain behaviors, like alcoholism. It doesn't mean that you don't have a choice in your behavior but it can help highlight a potential weakness that one should be aware of and do what they can to avoid. Kind of like obesity. Yes you may have a gene that makes you pre-disposed to gain weight, but no one is forcing you to sit on the couch and stuff your face with doughnuts. All it means is if you take yourself with that pre-disposition, and someone else whose genetics will more likely keep them skinny no matter what they do, and plop both of you down and stuff your faces, guess who's more likely to get fat? Exactly.

Thanks all.
He is the second to pass due to Alcoholism in his family. He is also the youngest of the 5 siblings. If it wasn't for my Mom I think my Dad would have died as well due to it.

Dont worry I will give my opinion anyways.

I can sympathize. My mom had three brothers all alcoholics, all passed away before their time.
Prayers to you and yours, Lanacan.
