Closest I ever got was taking a ride with an acquaintance of my Dad's who was going where I needed to be... Guy was nice, but damn that was uncomfortable and weird being alone in a car with a complete stranger (to me.)

Never hitchhiked, but I have accepted rides from strangers.
Last time was two years ago in Cancun, we decided to save a few bucks on the taxi back and burn some calories with a walk back. As we walked a man, lady, and baby in a small toyota single cab drove by and stopped and asked if we wanted a ride. I jumped in the bed of the truck, my companion was mortified but complied.
After they dropped us off, I tried to give them all the cash we had left but they refused and said tell your friends how nice Cancun is.
Worst case, I knew I could jump out of the truck bed.
