No matter what, the 'thug classifying' in this thread has been based totally on appearance. You can say "well I've seen other NBA athletes act like thugs", yet each player is still an individual. It is a lot more mainstream for African Americans to get large tattoos.
Most NBA players do not have a reputation for violence/drugs. Those things are very counter-productive for athletes (you have to work a LOT, and be in peak physical shape), so a lot of the bad players will have been weeded out before they reach the NBA.
Because there is really no basis in reality for these judgments, the people who make those judgments are either guilty of stereotyping/racism, or just being a parrot, echoing claims they've heard about the NBA.
