I'm actually a bit surprised that some of the older Detroit teams didn't do something like this... Detroit have been a well-oiled machine for what... 15 years now? One of the best run sports franchises in the world, really.

I agree, Machin, but then I get called a homer. Not only have they kept it up since the mid-late 90s, not only did they survive the implementation of a salary cap (which is bigger than a lot of people give it credit for.. it can be a backbreaker in sports), but they didn't miss a single beat afterwards. They were and still are finals contenders every year.
We are really, really spoiled hockey fans over here.
