I once used the phrase "fade to black" after a movie faded out as an interacial couple started to get intimate. I was being a racist and it was meant as a double entendre. I thought I was being clever. I wasn't. The phrase "fade to black' is not inherently racist. The problem was that I was using it in a racist way.
Similarly the phrase "chink in the armor" is not inherently racist. The phrase has probably been used longer than "Chink" has been used as a racial slur. To say this use of the phrase was racist assumes we know the intent or frame of mind of the user. We do not know this.

It doesn't matter if it was intended to be racist, all that matters is that people were offended by it and some perceived it as being racist. You can't upset a bunch of folks when you work in media, n omatter what intentions you have...you gonna get fired.
