I've never had marmite, but some kiwi friends of mine sent me some vegemite once. They said the problem with most Americans is they slather it on thick like butter or jam, but it should be thinly spread. Just enough to taste. So that's what I did (on crackers) and I thought it was quite pleasant. Very strong, but not bad. Spreading it on thick like peanut butter would have been a BAD idea.
Yeah, it's definitely not for slathering (although i've been known to put it quite thickly on toast, but i've been eating it since i was a baby lol). Personally i hate Vegemite, it just doesnt have the right flavour for me. If you get the chance to try some Marmite, go for it. 'Tis loverly

Very useful stuff. I use it as rat poison and it works great!
Also good for playing tricks at Halloween. Harden it up and it looks just like candy...
