How long can you keep up friendships with people who clearly don't understand you anymore?

I have a couple I've kept going just because they were close in the past and still reach out to me, but sometimes they say some really stupid things that make it clear they don't know me at all anymore. Sometimes it feels like there's no point to it.

It completely depends on whether the friendship can adapt/evolve. Since it seems there is not enough there otherwise, like shared activities/interests.

The answer to your question is: who cares?
As a guy you never have to officially "break" a friendship, you just sorta stop hanging out with them.
