I've got to give the Dems credit for managing to steer the entire national conversation to birth control when NO ONE really cares much about it, at all except as a stick to beat up socially-conservative republicans with.
This is a complete non-issue that the national press is loving shooting at the republican candidates. NONE of them brought it up.

I was thinking about this on the car ride home from work tonight. Why do we have to talk about this stupid issue every damn election?

RNC/LIFE PAC REPORT — 2010 Republican Candidates
Republican National Coalition for Life PAC supports Republican candidates who are pro-life without discrimination and who will work to translate Republican pro-life platform principles into public policy and law. For your information, we have listed the Republican Congressional Candidates whose responses to the RNC/Life Questionnaire indicate they are faithfully pro-life, and do not justify abortion for innocent babies who are conceived through rape or incest, have a handicap, or a genetic defect.
Politicians who justify the deliberate killing of an unborn baby hold a view that is inconsistent with the goal of the pro-life movement and the Republican National Platform which states in part: "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." We concentrated on the House candidates in 2010 because of the sheer number of Republican candidates. Not every candidate returned our questionnaire and lack of a listing on our candidate page does not indicate that the candidate is pro-choice, merely that he/she did not return a questionnaire. A few U.S. Senate candidates are also listed, who sought us out as pro-life Republicans.
-------------------------
Abortion
The Democratic Platform:
“We will defend the dignity of all Americans against those who would undermine it. Because we believe in the privacy and equality of women, we stand proudly for a woman’s right to choose, consistent with Roe v. Wade, and regardless of her ability to pay. We stand firmly against Republican efforts to undermine that right. At the same time, we strongly support family planning and adoption incentives. Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare.â€
The Republican Platform:
“As a country, we must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence. That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions. We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.

Please list one reason that you would support Santorum, Romney, or Gingrich if they become the Republican nominee in the election.
Reason #1 for most people voting for these candidates: Obama as the alternative

If Republican candidates stopped wanting big government to intervene in social matters, maybe the discussion wouldn't go there. But as long as a candidate is running around yelling "Satan! Satan! Satan!" and acting like a condom or birth control pill is the anti-christ, that candidate should be treated like an irrational cultist. I guess that's the cost of the evangelical vote. So sad too bad, they pander to who they want to.

I thought contraceptives came up because of the various kvetchings about Obamacare and then it was made into a religious freedom issue.
Wasn't that the whole point of the compromise thing to alleviate this? I just assumed it was an offshoot of discussions about how dangerous the health care plan was to America and then Dems seized it because it rallies the ladies.

All of the candidates are essentially the same with a few minor differences that mean nothing.
Obama, Big government, big spending Democrat, Black (sorta)
Romney, Big government, Big spending republican, Mexican
Gingrich, Big government, Big spending republican, multiple affairs on multiple wives
Santorum, Big government, Big spending republican, pretends to be religious nut
Paul, Big government, big spending republican, vagina Doctor.
Thats pretty much it as far as that goes.

The Pope hates condoms, that's what it's about.
People want religious freedom for organizations that think The Pope actually talks to God.
