This is why many restaurants have policies that if a bill is over so much that a mandatory gratuity is added to it.
You can get out of every single one of those simply by complaining about the service.
Not tipping = Ok.
A tip is a privilege, not a right.
Not tipping while writing crappy messages on the receipt?
Douchebag.
That's not true. Big parties are a pain in the ass restaurant side, and generally if the party is big enough the waiter is just doing that table and MAYBE a few others. Imagine being forced to placate some douchebags for 3 hours and getting no tip while the other waiters are turning around 3 or 4 tables an hour with a 5 buck tip each. It simply SHOULD cost more to go to a restaurant in a group.

I've done it.
Went out with a big group.
Got terrible service.
Complained to the management.
Told them that I'd be calling the corporate office in the morning if they made me pay the gratuity.
Didn't have to pay it.
If they had refused to have it taken off, a call to the district or corporate office almost always gets you a free dinner so the price is moot anyway.

Good for you, just cause I work in the industry doesn't mean I defend bad product, I am just saying it doesn't always work. Some people are dicks and try to pull the angle of always complaining to get free food. If the server knows their service was fine, and the GM saw the server working, a good GM doesn't pander to those people. If the gratuity is mentioned in the menu, you agreed to pay it the second you ordered. That's not to say you can't bull your way to a cheaper dinner, just that you generally shouldn't

Politics aside it is kind of funny
I find myself wondering when and where the idea that a tip was for good service died.

Why do Westerners always talk about karma? Not singling you out or anything but its become so pervasive and annoying.
