I have an iPhone 3 and I have no OS problems at all. Love my iPhone. Will be getting a new one eventually.

If you want to feel the heavenly light of the future in the palm of your hand, buy that iPhone. I keep all 5 of mine under my pillow every night so that I know they're safe from harm. I know Jesus wouldn't forgive me if I lost a holy relic.

I like ICS on my Galaxy Nexus. So I'll give that biased recommendation.

The only reason to wait is if you prefer Android over iOS.

I have owned both in the past and both performed well and were solid pieces of tech. I currently own an HTC Thunderbolt.

I like my iPhone. Never had a problem with it. Good to go out of the box, buy a few apps to meet your needs, automatically update/back-up every-time you plug it into iTunes, and when you get a new one in two years you just plug it in and all your contacts and content are moved to the new phone.

It's a great option if all you're goal is smartphone utility with minimal user effort; Same as apple computers. Now if you want to dick around with customization and nerd out on the technology then steer clear...
