They may have started out that way, but they didn't end that way. When they rested control from Don Kirshner, they took over their musical career and wrote many of their own songs, played their own instruments and sang everything, including their backing vocals. The only studio musician on that album was their friend and producer, Chip Douglas.
Bottom line - they're a band and I love their music.

They weren't even a real band. They were made up for TV and got so popular they had to go on tour. They all learned how to play.

Not true. Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were both musicians first. Davy played guitar, piano and drums, but the producers didn't like him behind the drum set because you couldn't see him since he was so short. The only one that didn't play an instrument initially was Mickey. Yes, they were put together for the show, but they became a real band in every sense of the word when they wrested control of their careers from Kirshner.
