Regarding upkeep,
I fully believe in supporting American companies, but they parts seem to be more expensive, pretty much across the board.
Then of course, there's the issue that all bikes in the US have - they get gunked up if they sit too long, because of the quality of gas.
Also, your initial cost will be higher, even on the lower end model - unless you get a used bike...but then, as compared to something else, it's still high.

I bought myself a small bike (250 CC) for metro commuting and ease of parking. Love it so far, I'll get a bigger one once I find one that suits me.

to be honest, I'm looking at a low end harley because I love the way they look, it's cheap, and gets better gas mileage than my V6 car. lol

If I were to buy an expensive bike, I think I would likely opt for a BMW myself.
