One time I was driving through some New Jersey industrial area that was in the midst of marsh land. Kerney, NJ if memory serves. I came across a box turtle of some kind crossing a two lane road. Not wanting to see it crushed by a truck, I stopped, picked him up and took him the rest of the way.

This wasn't a good idea as he didn't appreciate being handled and tried pretty hard to claw his way out of my hands. But that wasn't the worst of it. The process of carrying him the rest of the way disoriented him, he started to go back to the other side once I put him down. So I learned a lesson for that, that has stuck with me since. I may have been able to provide him some cover in the way of warning other drivers but I should not have interfered with his personal progress.

And yes, I generally like animals quite a bit.

We were in Oklahoma and my girls were pretty young and getting ready for a turtle race. I found them a river turtle and my oldest couldn't hardly hold it down for the start of the race. In the meantime other kids were trying to buy the turtle from them. Anyway, it easily won the race. Too bad I had to work and couldn't be there. Goddam steel mill.

I used to go turtle fishing in a pond near my house...you put a cork on the line and a medium hook and pull the cork almost all the way down to the hook. the turtles try and bite at the cork and they will get the hook sometimes.

the pond is infested with them so I never felt bad about it, and we were letting them go.

It seems around here people release them in Lake Washington. There is a rather large turtle population there now.
