The US is still does not produce enough oil to meet current demand. Nstural gas != oil.
Yes, natural gas is not oil. However, horizontal drilling/fracturing has opened up tight shale oil. My company is drilling wells in shale beds for the oil and natural gas liquids they produce. Natural gas interestingly enough, is no longer a target, it's too cheap.
edit: I remember seeing gas wars and it got to 12 cents a gallon once.
