I'm selling some appliances and have been communicated with someone.

He tells me he wants the item and has agreed to my price.

He asked for some information, name, address n such and said he will send me a certified check in the mail and once I receive payment I should email him and he will arrange pickup.

Am I about to get scammed? That seems pretty trusting of him. Who's to say I don't cash the check and run?

Is there any way I get screwed with a certified check? I deposit it to my bank account and then it doesn't clear or something?

Or is this pretty standard operating procedure for Craigslist?

It is very much a scam. Request cash and you will never hear from them again.

Google found this...

A certified check or certified cheque is a form of check for which the bank verifies that sufficient funds exist in the account to cover the check, and so certifies, at the time the check is written. Those funds are then set aside in the bank's internal account until the check is cashed or returned by the payee. Thus, a certified check cannot "bounce", and, in this manner, its liquidity is similar to cash, absent failure of the bank.

Most likely a fake check. Looks legit and even the bank will take it and credit it to your account... few days later they will find out your check is no good and you will have no appliances either.

Yeah I had seen that as well but still wasn't sure.

How do I know it's a real check to begin with.

After I deposit it, I assume it will take a couple days to "clear" at which point it comes back bogus and I'm out a washer/dryer and have no money to show for it.

Tyically, in this scam, the person sending it to you will tell you that it is for some huge amount, thousands of dollars. This is usually more than what they are paying you for whatever you're selling. They then ask you to give them their "change". This way you end up with a bad check AND out some money.

take it to the bank, let them look at it at tell them what you are doing.

they may be able to tell you if it is real, stolen, or what
