Most you've ever paid for a standardized test? |
Bar Exam - $649, Laptop Fee - $145, Bar Prep Course - $3500.
At least the test wasn't as expensive as yours, but the prep work/time was ridiculous.

I have not taken this personally, but it's the most expensive I know of:
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert
$350 for the written exam per attempt, and $1500 for the lab exam PER ATTEMPT. No one ever passes the lab on the first try, so you'll need to budget at least $3000 for the lab.
Not to mention, if you don't live in San Jose, Raleigh, Dallas, or Chicago, you have to pay for the flight, hotel, and rental car as well. Those are the only 4 locations in the US that administer the lab exam.

I have had some expensive certs in my old field of work, but it was always picked up by who ever I was employed by.

Ditto, they pick up the classes, exam costs, etc.
Just for someone trying on their own, that's an insane amount of money for a piece of paper that says you know what you're doing.
That's why so many people just take the written exam and call themselves "CCIE Candidates".

My respiratory therapy exam is $700, but I'm sure that'll go up by the time I write it in 2 years.

I didn't include the cost of review books, question banks, and transportation/housing. Probably closer to $3k with those. At least the pass rate is high, I've gotta give it that. I think that's balanced out by it only being the second test in a three test series though.
I couldn't sell my car for enough to cover the costs. That's depressing...

Nah... I'm highest for me so far has been 80 or 90... GRE, I think.
I'm going to set up a date for the ASBOG soon though, and I think it's something like 400.
