eh.. probably nothing so overt as that. All the RIAA had to do was lobby the FCC hard enough and the government would do it for them. If I recall though, Comcast and Time Warner were on the list of companies supporting SOPA.

This is way more intrusive than any law would ever be... you are protected from the government going through your crap via the 5th amendment (they at least need judicial approval)... you are protected from the company via your contract or ToS.

I am guessing that the RIAA threatened to sue them as knowingly aiding and abetting criminal activity or something... probably threatened them with a huge number... some figure that represented how much gets stolen.

Could you explain this to BT in very small words?

Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other Internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States will soon launch new programs to police their networks in an effort to catch digital pirates and stop illegal file-sharing.

Major ISPs announced last summer that they had agreed to take new measures in an effort to prevent subscribers from illegally downloading copyrighted material, but the specifics surrounding the imminent antipiracy measures were not made available. Now, RIAA chief executive Cary Sherman has said that ISPs are ready to begin their efforts to curtail illegal movie, music and software downloads on July 12.

I prefer the method they are using to the other method being used before (lawsuits and suing people for thousands of dollars over the value of the crappy movies they downloaded).

If a law is passed and the government is claiming that you broke it they at least need a certain threshold of proof to convince a judge that you did indeed break the law before they could start really going through your computer for proof/bug your stuff to see what you are dling.

No such restraint on private people...

edit: just noticed my mistake... 4th amendment protection not 5th.

There is still constitutional ground to break when it comes to the internet. What's important is that everyone rages hard collectively after every nazi step they take.
