Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other Internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States will soon launch new programs to police their networks in an effort to catch digital pirates and stop illegal file-sharing.

Major ISPs announced last summer that they had agreed to take new measures in an effort to prevent subscribers from illegally downloading copyrighted material, but the specifics surrounding the imminent antipiracy measures were not made available. Now, RIAA chief executive Cary Sherman has said that ISPs are ready to begin their efforts to curtail illegal movie, music and software downloads on July 12.

I hope they get sued and forced to stop.

The internet must remain a libertarian paradise.

Ironically enough I just received a letter from my ISP/Television provider saying that my price was going up about $10 a month due to programming costs.

They are, however, raising my internet speed to compensate for it.

yup. someones gotta pay for this and you can bet they won't cut their own profit. also interesting to note is new isp companies can't spring up to offer more "freedom". the way the internet is regulated right now if another company wanted to offer cable based internet in an area they would have to buy out the current cable company. i'm pretty sure its regulated so you cannot have two cable or dsl companies operating in the same area. so people will also be left without choices to protest it if they want to keep their internet. this happens anytime you give someone a monopoly on a service or good, they can stranglehold you with it. so we'll all be paying more for worse internet soon.

How about you cancel your service from those companies? Sounds like corporate suicide to me

LOL sued by who?

FWIW going the legal route is far less likely to amount to any real change. They can run their network any way they want and give the boot to any user they feel like. Internet access from any one of those companies isn't a right you know... you are bound by the terms of their service the moment you become their customer. They can (and have) kicked subscribers for abuse of their terms of service and nobody can tell them otherwise. Vote with your feet or STFU and figure out a way around it if you wanna keep pirating.

The RIAA complains to the FCC and the FCC bitchslaps the ISPs... that is the way of things.
