Either is fine.
Grits I generally add butter and salt, so I will go with oatmeal if I'm not in the mood for buttery flavor.
Probably would depend on whether I'm eating something else too. I don't think I've ever ordered oatmeal as a side dish, but I would order grits with a big breakfast.
