Perhaps, but I think he is still alive. Even if he warged isn't he pretty much dead? Don't they lose control after a while?
Personally I think hes too big of a character to die. I say hes a head of the dragon. To be fair we don't even know if that other guy died either.

Ned Mattered quite a bit in the book. I can say that as someone who has only watched three episodes of the show long after finished the first two or three books before hand. . . . Even postmortem, Ned is amongst the most important characters in the story.
