Why would a money making professional writer complain about fan fiction, or people writing fan fiction of his creations? I mean really fan fiction is what reminds everyone why exactly the pay to read the real competent professional writers stuff in the first place. You don't bitch anywhere near as much about having to pay $30 US for one of GRRM's works after reading a couple of pages of fan written deranged ravings.

The Marion Zimmer Bradley incident scared a lot of authors into fearing that fan fic authors could wrestle some of intellectual property rights away from the original author

I read that wiki, it appears the problem was with Bradley not wanting to give the real author a byline. She apparently wasn't able to write on her own at the time, and had been using ghost writers or doing collaborations.

I was just reading the wikipedia page about George RR Martin and a tidbit at the bottom says that he is opposed to fanfiction writing because he feels its copyright infringement and a bad exercise for aspiring writers.

What do you think?

If true, Martin is an idiot, on multiple aspects of the topic.

I personally wouldn't want someone taking my ideas and writing their own story about it, especially if they suck at writing, but I don't think it's copyright infringement and I doubt there's anything they can do about it.

I just wonder who reads it. Even my very favorite books I can't imagine reading fan fiction of it.

there is a LOT of harry potter fan fiction, and a lot of it is collaborated stories where someone starts it off, and people add to it.
