I was just reading the wikipedia page about George RR Martin and a tidbit at the bottom says that he is opposed to fanfiction writing because he feels its copyright infringement and a bad exercise for aspiring writers.
What do you think?

I believe Fan Fiction is covered under parody as well.
Not to mention, I think it's a good thing for kids that are interested in writing. Anything that inspires people to do something creative

It's a bad exercise for writers (or anyone for that matter, lol). If they aren't selling it in any way (as if they could!), then I don't think it is copyright infringement, but I aint a lawyer.

There's some delight in ale and wine,
And some in girls with ankles fine,
But my delight, yes, always mine,
Is to dance with Jak o' the Shadows.

copyright infringement has nothing to do with money.

Wouldn't fan fiction also be considered free advertising? Devil is in the details I guess.

Not only free advertising, but an unlimited source of ideas and inspirations to the writer who actually makes money from it.
Edit: I've also known a few fanfic writers that became ghost writers as well, it's GREAT experience for that line of work.

Parody, I strongly support (as some parodies have outshone their inspirations)...
Satire, I also strongly support as an invaluable tool to call attention to purposefully overlooked realities.
... but I tend to agree with Martin on this. There is a lack of integrity and creativity in fan fiction: it is unoriginal thought and construction, which is the most difficult part in creating something worth reading.
Fan fiction belittles and perverts the original work: look at Christians.
