Hey Steel,

Isn't the server on a Battery backup and all that?

I remember you mentioning several power bleeps screwed things up, I'm just not sure how

It was running off my bench not my production area. The old UPS there didn't handle the spikes as well as it should've and the server went down.

Don't see why it wouldn't be. This scan shouldn't take much longer then I can mount that drive in rw instead of read only.

Will a fairly current map be online when the server is back up? I kind of got boxed in and I'm thinking I need to relocate.

Yeah it was the nastiest spiking I have ever seen at this house. I think I actually blew a couple bulbs in the other room. All the important stuff is on solid UPSs though (routers, switches, entertainment center, main computers, etc) so didn't even flinch. Heck the server was still on and looked responsive after the spikes but I couldn't SSH into it and it wouldn't respond when I tried directly. I had to hard down it to get it to recycle.

Yeah I will gen a map when I bring it back up. The latest map would've vaporized since the web is served off the ram drive.

EDIT: Oh and they really need to address how they store chunk data, lol. It has been in stage three for a long time now and is blowing through file names so fast I can't read them but still isn't done. From the directory names I can read it looks like it has a ways to go.

Hopefully that is part of what they meant when they were talking about altering the way the game creates saves.

Honestly that represents the biggest real bottleneck in server performance. The IO overhead is INSANE. there are thousands and thousands of files nested in a crazy directory structure which, when you are talking multiple users running around, thrashes the drive like crazy. It is also what makes backups, recoveries and moving/archiving worlds a pain. That kind of file structure and huge amount of files is much harder to deal with than a single, or even dozens/hundreds, of larger data files.
