Not too sure about wrapping it around a village though. That might be problematic.
Doable if we find a low-altitude village that's fairly flat. A LOT more work than just slapping down the castle on a coastline.
Personally I'd be ok with using a few villager eggs to fake it if that would work. And that's waaaaay easier.

I haven't heard yet if villagers will use player made houses yet? Do you know?

if they don't it's okay I'll turn the castle village into just a castle. and maybe find a village and get it moved near it (might have to get rid of the in the water part lol

found it on minecraft wiki:
As of 12w07a the villages will automatically repopulate according to the number of houses in the village. If you are adding houses, they must have wooden doors and roofs.

I was showing my dad my minecraft castle.
it's a good thing I didn't use the drawbridge, cause SOMEONE put snow golems in the drawbridge
nice! I should see if I can get them to move to the walls.... might have to get the crenelations fenced in.
and thanks for the sand! You all rock!

With the AI behavior and respawning I would be curious to know if they designate a chunk as a village or how that works. For example... find a village and level it then plug in a couple houses with wooden roofs and doors. See if they repopulate. If so we can just plant the castle in a spot where there was a village and then build a new village in it.

Thats sort of what the SO and I are hoping.
I don't see why they would designate a chunk though. Would guess that they just recognize doors maybe? I dunno, will be interesting.
Worst case, they only recognize engine-generated houses.

easy to test, someone get the snapshot, load up a single player game creative, go build a house somewhere, where there are no other houses, with a wooden door and a wooden roof and see if npc villagers spawn in it!

They don't magically spawn, they breed to fill houses. So the test should be done by adding a house to a village.
I'll try a flat map in creative and see what I can find out.

That is my main question. I know they don't just spawn anywhere like sheep... sheeple, lol. So I am guessing an area is designated a village then the question is what designates a village. If it is just the area being flagged as a village (the reason I said chunks is most everything is by chunk) or is it some other identifier so the system knows there is a village there.
