well I had a dock that had current that would push the boats to the dock so it wouldn't get lost, but for some reason I couldn't go against the current with the boat.
At my place in the corner by the lake I have a piston drydock. For some reason it injures me now and then though.
One reliable way to get out of a boat is to click on a minecart. You can stick one on a piece of track and block it in with half blocks or something. Just put it at the edge of your dock. This way the boat doesn't go racing off.

Yeah the racing off thing was always my biggest issue. That or the spontaneous explosion of the boat when I hit shore.

yeah that's the biggest issues right there for me.
I'm going to retry the halfblock drydock idea.
I need to reconfigure my boathouse anyways, it wasn't lined up with the main shaft properly.

If I dry dock I take a ton of damage  wait I know! water bumpers! hrm means raising the level of the dock by one maybe two....

I used to build dock using doors to keep my boat from wandering off. Now I use pistons to keep my boats safe from thieving waters.

yeah go look at my boathouse (it's connected to my main shaft right above my work area.)
It's got a piston gate.
