Has Blizzard said anything about new servers for Cataclysm?

There's a sticky on the official forums with the answer to this question. It's been there for ... almost ... ever, but I have a feeling you knew that.

EU?

There likely will be new servers put up. WotLK had lots of low pop servers at launch. People were asking this very same question, with lots of people saying it will never happen.

Then they launched 12 new servers during and after the release.

I will be returning to play on one of them. If for some reason there aren't any, I likely won't play.

I don't get this logic at all. Any new server is going to be landrush for a month and then be another low pop wasteland by month two, whereas right now every high pop realm has a plethora of people rerolling with a steady population at the top.

Playing low pop on this game sucks almost as much as playing low pop in a PVP mmo. Almost.

I agree, I hate playing on a low pop realm. Even with Dungeon finder and battlegroups. The AH sucks and it is just no fun to never see anyone .. anywhere.

You may not get it, but there is a huge demand for it. The low population problem is fixable by Blizzard, and fairly easily too. The automation to do this is already in place. They just make so much gd money from transfers, why would they want to fix it? Paid transfers are one of the worst things to happen to WoW, but why is it there? Because it makes them a huge amount of money.

I agree with you that playing on low pop sucks. Which is why there's no way in hell I would come back and make a new character on one of those servers. People that want to roll a new realm want to do so to AVOID the type of situations that are on low population realms.

Examples:

Dead lowbie areas.
Noone to group with except in dugeon finder/friends who roll with you.
Destroyed/skewered economy(do you wanna pay a huge sum of gold for a pos green? or just get stuck with garbage gear until you somehow get rich).

A fresh server allows everyone to start on an even playing field. No Heirlooms, no transfers, fresh econ where everyone is broke(items are affordable if they want to be sold at all), lots of action going on EVERYWHERE, people to group with. It literally feels like a new game.

As I said, Blizzard could fix the low population problem fairly easily, if they wanted to.

I still don't see your logic.

What are your reasons for wanting a new server?

Lots of action in the lowbie areas? Cata brings this, it is already happening with the new race/class combos and will continue to happen with the new races. So lots of people to group with and lots of action everywhere.

The economy thing I sort of get, but it is very temporairy. It won't take more then a few months for people to be 80, making alts and the prices will inflate again. As it is when Cata hits because of all the rerolls the cost of low level items and materials will drop drastically as they flood the market. It will only be the top end items that will still go for a lot which you shouldn't be buying at that point anyway.

Under normal circumstances I understand the request for a fresh server, but in this case the expansion is almost giving every server that fresh restart, and doing so with out most of the draw backs of a fresh new server like low population.

Whether Blizzard could fix the low pop problem or not is irrelevent. They havn't so it remains a factor.

If you don't get it, you just don't get it. It's the experience a lot of people enjoy, not the final outcome.

Of course it will all end up very similar to what most of the current servers are at. But the fresh untouched server, levelling experience, community etc. is a much better experience.

You should try it out if/when it happens, you may find out why a lot of people love it.

Plenty of low population servers around.

So, no.

Sure YMMV,

I still stand by the opinion that Cata will closley resemble all the aspects you like about a fresh server with out any of the disadvantages of a new server. Best of both worlds IMO.

I've already been toying around on some new chars, checking out the new quests/starter zones etc. And I can say without difficulty that the experience isn't even close

This is one of those "it's not where you are going, it's how you get there" times. I play games for the fun and experience. Mostly, anyways
