Parry is a dodge with an attack bonus, for the most part. Think of a swordsman parrying a tank and then counterattacking immediately. Bosses with high parry rates can be wicked, hence why tanks like to stack some Expertise to keep from getting "parry gibbed" as Mithan puts it.

Parry is harder to find on gear, and I believe is a much steeper curve. Tanks tend to stack way more dodge than parry due to these reasons.

Changed with 4.0, Parry and Dodge take the same rating per percentage, rarity on gear however I don't know. I know all Defense on gear got turned into Dodge though so right now, probably true.

Parry Gib was removed on some bosses iirc, ones that hit extra hard. Rest of them weren't affected, course that coulda been changed a long time ago too. It should still work for players though.

"Parry - Parry no longer provides 100% avoidance and no longer speeds up attacks. Instead, when you parry an attack, it and the next attack will each hit for 50% damage (assuming they hit at all). In other words, Dodge is a chance to avoid 100% of the damage from one attack, Parry is a chance to avoid 50% of the damage from two attacks, and Block is a chance to avoid 30% of the damage from one attack."

I was looking on EJ, but it looks like many of the old threads were deleted so that new one can be created for the 4.0.3a overhaul. The above post is the blue post from when they announced the stat changes in March.

My mains are a druid and lock, so I'm familiar with the dodge mechanic, but not the parry.

Thanks for this, best answer so far. I'm not sure why Blizzard would code Dodge and Parry since they seem to do much of the same thing.

Is it not true that some classes can dodge but not parry? Some can do both?

Yes. Again, I don't really understand parry, but dodge is straight avoidance and at least a while back, druid bears would stack armor, dodge and agi (don't have parry or block) where as I imagine parry and block would be more important to a warrior.

I would venture to guess parry was probably intended to be used by dual wielding warriors, rogues, shamans as an extra defensive stat, but may have become a tanking stat as time went on and sword wielding tanks reached soft caps in stats like armor, defense, block, etc.
